Urine pH Test Strips: What the Number Means
What urine pH actually tracks, why the "alkaline body" claims do not hold up, and the real reasons to test it.
Urine pH strips are the simplest kit sold. One pad, one number. They are also the kit most often sold on a false premise. This guide covers what the number means and what it does not.
The number
pH measures acidity on a scale from 0 to 14. Seven is neutral. Urine normally sits between 4.5 and 8.0. The average is close to 6, slightly acidic.
The kidneys adjust urine pH to keep blood pH steady at about 7.4. Urine pH moves around a lot. Blood pH barely moves. That is the point. Urine is where the body dumps the acid or base it does not want.
What changes urine pH
Diet. A meal heavy in meat, cheese, and grains produces an acid load and pushes urine pH down. A meal heavy in fruit and vegetables produces an alkaline load and pushes it up. This is the dominant factor for a healthy person.
Time of day. Urine is usually most acidic first thing in the morning. After meals it rises for a few hours. This "alkaline tide" is normal.
Infection. Some bacteria produce urease, which breaks down urea into ammonia. Ammonia is alkaline. A urine pH above 8 with symptoms can point to infection with Proteus or a related organism.
Kidney stones. Uric acid stones form in acidic urine. Calcium phosphate and struvite stones form in alkaline urine. People with a history of stones sometimes test pH to steer their urine toward the range that discourages their stone type. This is the most legitimate reason for a healthy person to buy pH strips.
Certain medications and conditions. Some drugs and some metabolic conditions shift urine pH. Those are cases for a clinician, not a strip.
Delay. Urine left sitting for an hour or more turns alkaline as bacteria grow in it. Always test fresh.
The claim that does not hold up
A large share of pH strips are sold with the idea that you can "alkalize your body" by changing your diet and confirm it by testing urine. The urine part is true. Diet does change urine pH, and the strip will show it.
The body part is not. Blood pH is held between about 7.35 and 7.45 by the lungs and kidneys. Diet does not move it in a healthy person. A shift outside that range is a medical emergency, not a wellness goal. Urine pH going up means the kidneys are excreting more base. It does not mean the rest of you got more alkaline.
If the strip is being sold to confirm a diet is working, it will do that. If it is being sold to confirm a health benefit from that diet, it cannot.
Reading the strip
pH pads read at 30 to 60 seconds. The chart runs in half point or whole point steps. Most home strips read in whole points, which is fine for diet or stone tracking.
Do not let urine run from a neighboring pad across the pH pad on a multi pad strip. The protein pad in particular is acidic and can drag the pH reading down. Tap the strip on the cup edge and lay it flat.
Buying notes
- Single pad pH strips are the cheapest test strip sold. Do not buy a 10 parameter strip to read pH.
- Look for a range of at least 4.5 to 9 in half point or whole point steps.
- Strips sold for pools, aquariums, or soil use different chemistry tuned to a different range. They can read urine but the chart is not made for it.
- Litmus paper is not the same thing. It tells you acid or base, not a number.
