Resting Heart Rate: What the Number Tells You
Every wearable reports it and few people know what to do with it. The normal range, what drives it up and down, why the trend matters more than the value, and when a number is worth a visit.
Resting heart rate is the number of times the heart beats per minute when you are awake, still, and calm. It is the oldest vital sign, the easiest to measure, and, since wrist wearables started reporting it, the most widely tracked health number in the world. It is also more informative than its simplicity suggests, provided it is read the right way.
The range
Textbooks give 60 to 100 beats per minute as normal for adults. Large population studies suggest the healthy range sits lower, roughly 50 to 80, with the average for adults in their 40s around 65 to 70. Well trained endurance athletes commonly sit in the 40s and occasionally the high 30s, with no ill effect.
Above about 80 at rest, risk begins to rise in cohort data. A resting rate persistently over 90 in a healthy adult is associated with higher rates of heart disease and death, independent of fitness and blood pressure, although whether the heart rate causes the risk or reflects it is not fully settled.
What it measures
The resting rate is the balance between the two halves of the autonomic nervous system. The sympathetic side speeds the heart; the parasympathetic side, through the vagus nerve, slows it. A low resting rate in a healthy person means strong parasympathetic tone and a heart that pumps more per beat, so it needs fewer beats. That is what aerobic training produces, which is why resting heart rate is the most accessible marker of cardiovascular fitness there is. What pushes it up
Most of what raises resting heart rate is temporary and worth knowing about because it explains the day to day noise.
- Dehydration, which reduces blood volume, so the heart beats faster to maintain output. See specific gravity and hydration for a way to check.
- Alcohol the night before, typically adding 5 to 10 beats the next morning.
- Poor sleep or a late night.
- Illness, often a day before symptoms appear. Many people first learn they are getting sick from their wearable.
- Heat, and hot weather generally.
- Caffeine, nicotine, decongestants, some asthma inhalers, and thyroid medication.
- Stress and anxiety.
- Hard training without enough recovery. A rate 5 or more beats above baseline for several days is a common early sign of overreaching.
- Anemia, an overactive thyroid, and fever, which raise it persistently.
What brings it down
Aerobic exercise is the main one. Regular moderate activity lowers resting heart rate by about 5 to 10 beats over a few months in most untrained adults, and the drop tracks improvements in fitness. Weight loss, better sleep, and cutting alcohol all help. Beta blockers and some other medications lower it deliberately.
How to measure it properly
Wearables measure it overnight or in the early morning, which is the most consistent time and the figure worth tracking. To measure by hand: after sitting quietly for five minutes, or on waking before getting up, find the pulse at the wrist below the thumb, count beats for 30 seconds, and double. Do it at the same time of day.
Wrist optical sensors are accurate at rest, within a couple of beats of an ECG. They become unreliable during exercise, especially with arm movement, so a resting figure is the one to trust.
Reading the trend
A single reading says little. A month of morning readings says a lot. The pattern to watch is a baseline, which for a given person is stable to within a few beats, and departures from it. Three days at 8 beats above baseline with no obvious cause is a reason to look at sleep, hydration, and training load. A steady drift downward over months is fitness improving. A steady drift upward without a change in habits is a reason to mention it at a checkup.

When to see someone
A resting rate consistently over 100 without an explanation such as fever, or under 50 with dizziness, fainting, or breathlessness, warrants a visit. So does an irregular rhythm, which many wearables now flag; the common finding is atrial fibrillation, which is treatable and worth catching. And any sudden, large change in the baseline that does not settle in a week or two.
Heart rate variability
Most wearables also report heart rate variability, the small beat to beat differences in timing. Higher variability generally reflects better recovery and stronger parasympathetic tone. It is more sensitive than resting rate and also far noisier, differing between devices and days. It is best read the same way: as a personal baseline and a trend, never as a score to compare with anyone else.
